107 Niddrie Road Announced as Exemplar Sustainable Buildings Awards Finalist

107 Niddrie Road has been announced as a finalist for this year’s Exemplar Sustainable Buildings Awards.

Celebrating the Sustainable Development Foundation’s 20th anniversary, the Exemplar Sustainable Buildings Awards unite two leading award schemes from SDF Alliance partners, the Passivhaus Trust (PHT) & Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP).

They build on the UK Passivhaus Awards’ data-driven approach and the ASBP Awards’ focus on
embodied carbon and healthy buildings, aligning with the SDF’s holistic high-performance sustainability indicators.

This one-off event will recognise the UK’s most pioneering sustainable building projects, innovative products, and transformative initiatives.

107 Niddrie Road is a finalist in the ‘Retrofit’ category and is recognised as one of the most pioneering projects of its kind in Scotland.

Located in the southside of Glasgow, the project comprised eight vacant two-bedroom apartments within a 150-year-old end terrace being retrofitted to an EnerPHit standard of build.

A pilot initiative, the project was part-funded by Glasgow City Council and The Scottish Funding Council to provide Glasgow and other local authorities with the means to address the sustainability and fuel poverty agendas in tenemental housing stock, of which there are over 70,000 in the Glasgow City region alone.

To achieve EnerPhit, which is a Passivhaus accreditation for existing buildings, a comprehensive refurbishment that included plot reconfiguration, enhanced insulation, new windows and door sets, and the adoption of low-carbon technologies such as air source heat pumps, and waste water heat recovery.

Whilst EnerPHit wasn’t ultimately achieved, residents are still the beneficiaries of the advanced performance, with an estimated reduction in energy use (when compared to similar properties) between 80 and 90%.

The flats have been the subject of a 2-year analysis led by The University of Glasgow, where monitoring systems have been installed in different rooms of each dwelling to gather data on true build performance, as well as understanding more about the trends associated with tenants’ energy consumption.

CCG led the delivery of the project on behalf of Southside Housing Association in partnership with John Gilbert Architects.
