CCG (Scotland) commenced work on behalf of The City of Edinburgh Council on Monday, 31 March 2025, with the project expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Upon completion, the homes – designed by Anderson Bell + Christie – will provide much-needed wheelchair accommodation in a city centre location while incorporating innovative, energy efficient design features, such as an enhanced building fabric through use of CCG’s ‘iQ’ Timber System integrated with high levels of insulation and low-U value windows, and a renewable energy strategy comprising zero-emissions NIBE exhaust air source heat pumps for space heating and hot water, and solar PV panels.
Housing, Homelessness and Fair Work Convener Lezley Marion Cameron said: “As we continue to face an ongoing housing emergency in Edinburgh, the need for affordable, accessible, and larger family homes has never been more urgent. The city is experiencing a severe shortage of housing options that meet the diverse needs of our residents, particularly those with disabilities and those who require the use of a wheelchair.
“The development at Cowan’s Close is part of our efforts to address the housing crisis. These new homes represent a significant investment in the future of the city’s housing landscape and our commitment to ensure families with specific needs have access to safe, sustainable, and affordable accommodation.”
CCG Managing Director, David Wylie, said: “We are delighted to have commenced construction at Cowan’s Close. The project is another great example of how The City of Edinburgh Council and CCG are working collaboratively to address the demand for new, affordable homes in the city, and it will be a much welcome addition to the Newington community upon completion next year.”
During the course of the development’s construction programme, CCG will also deliver a range of community benefit initiatives, encompassing the creation of 5 new jobs, 6 work placements, 4 career-based events with local schools, and £7,000 in investment.
