Sod Cutting Marks Beginning of Construction In Viewpark

A sod-cutting ceremony was held at Laburnum Road in late January 2026 to officially mark the start of construction on 26 new affordable homes in Viewpark.

The development is being delivered by CCG (Scotland) on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council, and will be made up of 4 x 3 bedroom homes; 1 x 4 bedroom bungalow (wheelchair); 1 x 2 bedroom bungalow (wheelchair); 1 x 1 bedroom cottage flat (wheelchair); 8 x 2 bedroom bungalow (amenity); 9 x 2 bedroom cottage flat (amenity) and 2 x 1 Bedroom cottage flat (amenity), designed by Coltart Earley Architecture.

Each amenity plot includes special design features or access to help tenants live independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

Attending the event was Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake, who cut the first sod, alongside Councillor Margaret Boyd. Other attendees included representatives from developer CCG (Scotland), North Lanarkshire Council and St John Paul II Primary School.

Councillor McPake said: “We continue to make significant progress delivering our new supply programme. We’ve completed 1,629 homes and have a further eight projects on site which will deliver over 300 new homes. This site at Laburnum Road is situated in the heart of the local community with excellent transport links and amenities and will deliver modern homes for our tenants.

“Our new homes change the face of our local communities, provide jobs and training opportunities and boost the local economy. Providing sustainable housing for our tenants now and for generations to come is all part of our ambition to make North Lanarkshire the place to live.”

The development, which is expected to be completed by spring next year, costs £6.3m with Scottish Government grant funding of £2.7m.

CCG (Scotland) Managing Director, David Wylie, added: “We are delighted to be supporting North Lanarkshire Council by bringing much-needed affordable homes to Viewpark. The project is one of three currently on site with the council across the region (totalling over 250 homes) and continues a successful partnership that will deliver long-term benefits for future tenants, with a mix of homes addressing a variety of needs, as well as for the wider community through job and apprenticeship opportunities.

“I thank the council for their continued support and look forward to seeing how the works progress in the months ahead.”

CCG continues to advance a further two developments in Coatbridge, with the regeneration of the former Columba High School in Whifflet (127 homes) and Dunotter Avenue (100 homes) in Shawhead.

The Laburnum Road project was procured through the Scottish Procurement Alliance.
